Cubs Sign Kenta Maeda to Minor League Deal After Tigers Release

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs signed veteran right-hander Kenta Maeda to a minor league contract on Friday, offering him a chance to revive his career after a difficult stint with the Detroit Tigers.
Maeda, 37, was designated for assignment by the Tigers on May 1 and subsequently released on May 7. He struggled in his seven relief appearances this season, posting a 7.88 ERA and 6.09 ERA in 29 appearances last year, which included 17 starts.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed the signing before the team’s 13-3 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. He expressed hope that Maeda could recapture some of his former success.
“I think it’s a player that you got to have a constant conversation with, and see where we can maybe make some adjustments,” Counsell said. “We want to see where he’s at.”
Maeda debuted in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016, achieving a 16-11 record with a 3.48 ERA in 32 starts. He also had a standout season in 2020 with the Minnesota Twins, finishing second in Cy Young Award voting.
The Cubs are currently dealing with injuries to three key starting pitchers, making Maeda’s addition even more significant. Shota Imanaga is recovering from a mild hamstring strain, while other players face various ailments.
Counsell indicated that Imanaga would be assessed over the weekend as the team creates a plan for his return. Meanwhile, the Cubs hope that adding Maeda will bolster their bullpen.
Maeda holds a career record of 68-56 with a 4.20 ERA over 226 games, which includes 172 starts. His experience and potential make him a valuable asset as the Cubs aim for a playoff push this season.
