Chicago Cubs White Sox Rivalry Players

CHICAGO, IL – Chris Flexen felt the weight of history on his shoulders as he pitched at Wrigley Field last season for the Chicago White Sox. This year, he embraces a new role with the Chicago Cubs, who are leading their division and hold a record of 25-19.

Flexen’s last experience in the historic ballpark was part of a season filled with disappointment for the Sox, who ended up with a poor record of 14-30. He recalls last season’s intense series against the Cubs, noting, “The biggest thing is you just see the city of Chicago come out and support their teams, no matter what side it’s on.”

Joining Flexen on the Cubs are former Sox players, infielder Nicky Lopez and right-hander Brad Keller. Flexen held the Cubs to just one run across nine innings during their face-offs last season, although his team lost both games. This year, he is ready to engage in the rivalry from the other side. “It’s definitely a cool, awesome city rivalry to be a part of,” he said.

The Cubs, bolstered by their recent acquisitions, look like a team set for greater success than the rebuilding Sox. Flexen faced personal challenges last year, with a 4.95 ERA after leading the Sox with 160 innings pitched. “I tried to focus on being prepared every day to compete,” he explained, emphasizing resilience amidst a tough season.

Nicky Lopez also shared his thoughts on the transition from the Sox to the Cubs. The Naperville native, who had a challenging 2024 season, aimed to showcase his defensive skills after signing a minor-league contract with the Cubs. “I lost a little bit of a step last year,” Lopez admitted. “But I knew I wanted to play for a winner.”

Lopez has started nine games at third base this season, and he expressed confidence in his fit with the Cubs. Similarly, Keller remarked on the positive atmosphere the Cubs provide, which starkly contrasts with the struggles he experienced with the Sox. “It’s just been a heightened level of focus here,” Keller said. “We’re a really good team built for sustained success.”

As the season progresses, the excitement around the team creates a different energy. Cubs fans are eager for the upcoming matches, hoping to witness thrilling moments as the rivalry continues. The players on both sides are keenly aware of the stakes involved, and Flexen, Lopez, and Keller look forward to contributing to the Cubs’ potential success this year.
