FA Cup Third Round Draw: Premier League and Championship Teams Learn Their Fate
The highly anticipated FA Cup third round draw took place on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Manchester United‘s Old Trafford stadium. This draw marked the entry of all 20 Premier League teams and 24 Championship teams into the competition, joining the 20 clubs that advanced from the second round over the weekend.
The draw, broadcast live on BBC Two and iPlayer from 7pm GMT, saw the remaining 64 teams learn their opponents for the next round. Notable teams include current FA Cup holders Manchester United, Premier League leaders Liverpool, and Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City. Two non-league teams, Dagenham & Redbridge and Tamworth, who play in the fifth tier, are among the hopefuls looking to secure ties against top-tier English sides.
The third round matches are scheduled to be played over the weekend of January 11-12, 2025. This season introduces a new rule eliminating replays from the first round onwards; instead, games that end in a draw will proceed to a 30-minute period of extra time followed by penalty kicks if necessary.
The draw at Old Trafford was significant, as it sets the stage for the road to Wembley for all participating teams. The event was closely followed by fans and teams alike, eager to see the matchups that will shape the early stages of the competition.
