KC Current Kicks Off Season Against Portland Thorns Tomorrow

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Current will launch their second season on Saturday, March 15, at home against the Portland Thorns. The match is set to kick off at 11:45 a.m. CT at CPKC Stadium and marks an important moment for a team looking to build on their successful previous season.
Last year, the Current experienced a historic campaign, finishing fourth in the standings and making it to the semifinal round of the NWSL playoffs. The team recorded an impressive 16 wins and set an NWSL record by scoring 57 goals over the season. Team captain Lo Labonta reflected on the upcoming season, expressing confidence in her team’s potential. “I want us to play well every game. I want every player to stay healthy. You obviously want to win,” Labonta said.
For fans attending the season opener, here’s what to know: pre-match activities will kick off at 8:45 a.m. on the CPKC front plaza. Gates open at 9:45 a.m., and fans in the Kansas City Blue Crew supporters section should arrive early, as seating is open. Autograph opportunities with players are scheduled for 10:15 a.m., just before the highly anticipated kickoff.
Due to ongoing construction, the Grand Boulevard Bridge is closed, necessitating alternative travel routes. Fans are advised to take Berkley Riverfront Parkway and follow signage for drop-off near Port KC. Additionally, on-site parking at CPKC Stadium is sold out, and those without a parking pass will need to use alternative methods to get to the venue.
Fans attending the match can bring several items, including clear bags no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches, personal cameras, binoculars, signs, and lightweight banners. However, backpacks are not permitted, and items like umbrellas and specified water bottles will also be allowed. A full list of allowed and prohibited items is available on the stadium’s website.
The weather is expected to be chilly, with a high of 55 degrees. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly, especially since festivities start early in the morning.
Coming into this season, the Portland Thorns are looking to rebound from a sixth-place finish last year and have undergone significant roster changes due to retirements and injuries. Key players like Sophia Wilson are absent due to personal reasons. Nonetheless, they’re hoping to compete effectively with new signings such as Deyna Castellanos, who brings experience and scoring power to the squad.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovski will look to continue building on the successes of the previous season and maintain the momentum that has captured local fans. The upcoming match against the Thorns is not only a season opener but also a chance for the Current to solidify their place among the league’s top teams after last year’s successes.
For those unable to attend in person, the match will be broadcast nationally on ABC, allowing fans to support the Current from home.
