On October 9, 2024, the Indian stock markets observed a mixed performance with the key indices, the Nifty and the Sensex, both closing in the red, while mid and small-cap stocks witnessed gains. The Nifty index ended the trading session at 25,013.15, registering a decline of 0.12%. Throughout the day, Nifty reached a high of 25,234.05 and a low of 24,947.70. Meanwhile, the Sensex fluctuated between 82,319.21 and 81,342.89, closing 0.21% lower at 81,634.81, which is 167.71 points below the opening level.

In contrast to the major indices, the Nifty Midcap 50 outperformed by finishing with an increase of 0.86%. Small-cap stocks also showed robust performance, as indicated by the Nifty Small Cap 100 index’s rise to 18,617.65, up by 246.95 points or 1.33%.

Over different time frames, the Nifty 50 has had the following performance: a decrease of 1.1% in the past week, a minor increase of 0.14% over the last month, a 2.21% rise in the last three months, a 10.29% gain over the past six months, and a substantial yearly increase of 27.98%.

On the list of top gainers in the Nifty index, Cipla topped the charts with a 2.43% increase. It was closely followed by Trent at 2.22%, Tata Motors at 2.10%, State Bank of India at 2.04%, and Maruti Suzuki India at 1.83%. On the other hand, ITC led the decliners with a 3.20% drop. Other significant losers included Nestle India, down by 2.55%, Hindustan Unilever at 1.77%, Britannia Industries with a 1.73% decline, and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, which decreased by 1.69%.

The Bank Nifty closed at 51,021.0, having reached an intraday high of 51,707.15 and a low of 50,903.75. Its historical performance includes a weekly drop of 1.6%, a marginal decrease of 0.2% in the past month, a 2.96% fall over the last three months, a 4.68% rise in the last six months, and a 16.24% increase over the past year.

In other significant market movements, Gujarat Ambuja Exports experienced a notable rise, increasing by 9.31%. RITES followed with an 8.24% gain, and Central Depository Service India saw an increase of 8.06%. In contrast, Bank of Maharashtra was one of the top decliners, falling by 4.17%, followed by Vodafone Idea down by 3.26%.
