Dallas Center-Grimes Defeats Cedar Rapids Xavier in Girls Soccer Semifinal

Ames, Iowa — In a tense battle on Thursday, three-time defending state champion Dallas Center-Grimes edged out Cedar Rapids Xavier with a 2-0 victory in the Class 2A girls’ soccer semifinals at Lied Recreation Fields.
The Mustangs, ranked second in the state, did not score until the second half when Landry Glasgow broke through the Saints’ solid defense with 29:26 left in the match. “Big games, big moments, lots at stake,” said Xavier Coach Jacob Johnson. “I think we did a good job all year preparing to play more physical.”
The Saints finished the season with an 8-4-4 record and had previously earned recognition for their strong defense, having allowed just 12 goals prior to this match. Johnson expressed pride in his team’s effort, saying, “I’m very proud of the girls—they battled the whole game.”
In a late push, Paisley Heidgerken sealed the Mustangs’ win with an insurance goal at 24:16 remaining. Johnson praised the quality of the match, describing it as “very open” and a great showcase for Iowa soccer.
This semifinal marked Xavier’s 19th appearance in the state tournament. Johnson noted that the team is “quietly building on the successes of previous years.” He added, “Even getting to play in the state tournament is a privilege,” hinting at the bright future for returning players.
As the Mustangs advance, Cedar Rapids Xavier’s season comes to a close. Coach Johnson remains hopeful about the experience his team gained and what it can mean for the future.
