Dallas Cowboys Extend Veteran Punter Bryan Anger in Free Agency

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have successfully retained veteran punter Bryan Anger, agreeing to a two-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2026 season. The announcement came on March 11, 2025, just ahead of the NFL’s official free agency start, showcasing the organization’s intent to solidify their special teams unit.
Anger, who has been a significant contributor since joining the Cowboys in 2021, is expected to continue his impactful role alongside Pro Bowl kicker Brandon Aubrey. Over the past four seasons, he has averaged an impressive 49 yards per punt, with his career-high of 51.4 yards per punt earned during the 2023 season, where he also received a second-team All-Pro selection.
“It’s a great feeling to return to a city and team that feels like home,” Anger said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing to grow and improve as a player alongside my teammates.”
One of Anger’s career highlights includes a remarkable 83-yard punt against the Chicago Bears in 2022, which stands as his longest in the NFL. He also gained attention when a punt struck the AT&T Stadium videoboard during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals the same year.
Growing up in Camarillo, California, Anger played college football at the University of California. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, where he spent four seasons before moving on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans.
As the Cowboys prepare for the new NFL season, Anger’s retention comes alongside other notable offseason moves. The team is expected to bolster their roster through free agency while focusing on key positions to maximize their potential heading into 2025.
“Keeping Bryan as part of our special teams unit is essential for our overall performance on the field,” Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “His ability to produce consistently gives us an advantage in crucial situations.”
As the March 12 deadline for official free agency approaches, Dallas aims to make strategic moves that will enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season. The NFL’s salary cap has risen this year to $279.2 million per team, giving these moves extra significance as franchise budgets are tightened.
