Arlington, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys staged a remarkable turnaround on Sunday, overcoming a 21-point deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21. The win came just weeks after the tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, marking a poignant moment for the team. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, in his first year, insisted his team could do better during a halftime talk while acknowledging the emotional toll of their teammate’s loss.

“I challenged them at halftime on the fact that we were beating ourselves, and if we just started executing a little bit better, we’d be fine,” Schottenheimer shared. He recalled asking the players if they believed they could win, to which they all replied, ‘Yes.’ This moment galvanized the team, setting the stage for their second-half success.

Despite the slow start, the Cowboys managed to turn the game around. The explosive energy and passion reminiscent of Kneeland’s style was evident as they closed the gap and eventually snatched victory with a walk-off field goal.

Kneeland, who was in his second NFL season, passed away on November 6. His death impacted the team deeply, and players spent time honoring him post-bye week. Schottenheimer described a team meeting held on November 10 where they shared laughter and tears, emphasizing the importance of support among teammates during such a difficult period.

“We had some experts there that we could talk to, and we had breakout sessions where we could talk about it, share our feelings,” Schottenheimer explained. He highlighted the unique culture of the locker room, asserting that it is a special place bonded by love and support. “If anything, I think it’s kind of brought us even closer together,” he said.

The Cowboys’ defense, which had struggled earlier in the season, shone brightly in the second half against the Eagles, holding them scoreless. The timely turnovers, including a critical fumble by Saquon Barkley, helped Dallas regain momentum. Schottenheimer expressed pride in the entire team, particularly the defensive line, for stepping up during this challenging time.

Even after such a significant win, the emotional impact of Kneeland’s loss remained palpable among players. Following the game, the team celebrated with a flag honoring Kneeland, demonstrating their commitment to carry his spirit forward.

“We are connected for life through this,” Schottenheimer noted. “I just knew he was looking down on us and he was so proud of what these guys were able to overcome.” The Cowboys now shift their focus to their upcoming Thanksgiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
