Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Quarterbacks Coach

DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys announced on Monday their promotion of Steve Shimko to quarterbacks coach as part of their renewed coaching staff aimed at enhancing performance under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Shimko, who served as an offensive assistant for the Cowboys last season, will take over the quarterbacks room previously held by Scott Tolzien, who coached Dak Prescott over the last two seasons.

This decision follows the hiring of Ken Dorsey as an offensive analyst in Dallas. The reshuffle emphasizes the Cowboys’ desire for continuity and familiarity as they work towards optimizing Prescott’s performance in the upcoming season.

“The Cowboys are promoting Steve Shimko to quarterbacks coach, per source,” reported SI’s Albert Breer on X. “Shimko is well thought of by everyone in Dallas, including Dak Prescott. His experience working with Schottenheimer in Seattle makes him a fitting choice.”

Shimko brings valuable experience to the position, having worked with Schottenheimer during their time together with the Seattle Seahawks. He began his NFL career as an offensive analyst in 2018 and advanced to assistant quarterbacks coach.

Prior to his time in Dallas, Shimko spent four years at Boston College, where he progressed from a tight ends coach to quarterbacks coach and ultimately offensive coordinator. Under his guidance in 2023, the Eagles ranked in the top 15 nationally for rushing attempts and yards per game.

The Cowboys’ coaching turnover has been notable, with Shimko becoming the sixth quarterbacks coach in Prescott’s career since he was drafted in 2016. With two head coaches during that span, there has been a substantial focus on restoring stability moving forward.

<p“The overall youth of the new staff may allow for the introduction of fresh ideas, contributing to a revived team culture,” noted Breer. “The Cowboys need to eliminate any complacency that may have caused a disappointing 7-10 season in 2024.”

Schottenheimer’s initial coaching staff has come together quickly, exhibiting a level of coherence that had been lacking in previous years. Shimko’s promotion highlights a clear strategy in building a collaborative and familiar environment for Prescott.

As the offseason progresses, the Cowboys may still look to fill various roles, including a pass-game specialist. Dorsey, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, is expected to join the staff, reinforcing a commitment to bolster the offensive strategy.

“With the new coaching structure, fans are hopeful for greater success and a turnaround in the coming season,” concluded Breer.
