Dallas, Texas – Amid ongoing speculation about Jason Kidd‘s future, sources indicate that the Mavericks head coach is expected to remain with the team. The 52-year-old Hall of Famer has two years left on his contract, but with the New York Knicks reportedly interested in hiring him, the situation has drawn attention.

As of Tuesday, June 10, the Knicks had not formally requested to interview Kidd, according to team sources. The Mavericks have assured stakeholders that Kidd will not be leaving. A source from the Mavericks stated they continue to clarify Kidd’s commitment to the team.

Kidd’s relationship with the Knicks, particularly with star point guard Jalen Brunson, adds another layer to the story. Kidd coached Brunson during the 2021-22 season, and their shared success in the playoffs has fueled rumors about a possible reunion in New York.

The Knicks recently fired Tom Thibodeau after reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years, creating an immediate need for a new head coach. Kidd’s connection to the team and his past with Brunson could make him a desirable candidate for the Knicks.

However, the Mavericks have actively pursued a lead assistant coaching position for Jay Triano, previously involved with the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns. Triano accepted the position only after receiving assurances from Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison that Kidd would remain as head coach, further signaling the team’s confidence in Kidd’s future.

Despite the uncertain dynamics, the Mavericks assert that Kidd’s tenure will continue. This sentiment is supported by Kidd’s recent presence at team workouts and a stable leadership role as he engages with the coaching staff.

While the Knicks wish to improve their coaching staff, Kidd’s prior decision to leave Dallas for New York in 2012 adds historical context to the current situation. If Kidd were to leave again, it would mark a significant turn in his career.

Sources indicate that Kidd may be leveraging interest from the Knicks to negotiate a more substantial contract with the Mavericks. For now, both teams are facing critical decisions as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season.
