Dallas Stars Activate Tyler Seguin Ahead of Playoff Push

DALLAS, Texas — Tyler Seguin has been activated by the Dallas Stars from long-term injured reserve ahead of their regular-season finale against the Nashville Predators, the team announced on Wednesday. Seguin, who last played on December 1, underwent hip surgery on December 5 and has missed the last 58 games.
The 33-year-old forward is considered a game-time decision for the matchup against the Predators. His successful recovery from a femoroacetabular impingement and labrum tear in his left hip will be crucial as the Stars prepare for the Stanley Cup playoffs, where they will face the Colorado Avalanche.
Prior to his injury, Seguin had showcased his skills with 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in just 19 games this season, ranking third on the team in points. He formed an impressive line with teammates Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment, contributing significantly to the Stars’ offensive success. Seguin’s presence will likely bolster the team’s chances as they aim to advance deep into the postseason.
“It would be nice to get Seguin some game action instead of going cold into the playoffs,” head coach Pete DeBoer said after morning skate. DeBoer expressed optimism about Seguin’s return, although noted that it was only one game before the playoffs begin on Saturday.
The Stars made roster adjustments to create necessary salary cap space, sending defensemen Alexander Petrovic and Lian Bichsel to the AHL. This move allows them to remain cap-compliant while enabling Seguin’s return.
Seguin’s injury had initially cast doubt on his ability to return this season, given the lengthy recovery timeline of four to six months provided by medical staff. However, his rehabilitation has progressed well, and he has participated in contact during practice sessions.
The Stars will also be eager to welcome another key player back, as defenseman Miro Heiskanen continues to recover from knee surgery. Although Heiskanen will not be available for the first game against Colorado, management is hopeful for his return as the playoffs advance.
With Seguin back in the lineup, the Stars are primed for a strong playoff run. General Manager Jim Nill emphasized the importance of Seguin’s health, as he is not only a veteran presence but also a crucial component of the team’s offensive capabilities.
Seguin’s successful recovery is significant for his long-term career as well, especially given his prior experiences with similar injuries. During the 2020-21 season, Seguin dealt with right hip issues that limited his playtime and raised concerns about his future. Now, with two years left on his current contract, his ability to perform reach his previous form is vital for both his career and the Stars’ aspirations moving forward.
