Dallas Stars Fire Coach Pete DeBoer After Playoff Exit

FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Stars announced today, June 6, 2025, that they have relieved head coach Pete DeBoer of his duties. General Manager Jim Nill made the announcement following the team’s elimination from the NHL playoffs.
“After careful consideration, we believe that a new voice is needed in our locker room to push us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup,” Nill stated. He also expressed gratitude towards DeBoer for his contributions over the past three seasons, wishing him success in the future.
Nill will hold a media availability today at 12 p.m. CT at the Comerica Center in Frisco. The firing follows the Stars’ disappointing exit in the Western Conference finals against the Edmonton Oilers. DeBoer led the team to a record of 149 wins, 68 losses, and 29 overtime losses, along with three consecutive appearances in the conference finals, but a questioned tactical decision in Game 5 and coaching relationships resulted in discontent among players.
Reports indicate that several players voiced their concerns about DeBoer’s coaching during exit interviews. Players were particularly frustrated with DeBoer’s decision to bench goaltender Jake Oettinger, which sparked discussions about accountability and team dynamics. “It’s clear that players were upset about how things unfolded this season,” a source close to the team said, emphasizing the division created by both on-ice decisions and leadership style.
Despite ongoing speculation regarding DeBoer’s future, Nill’s decision reflects a desire for change as the team aims to capture its first Stanley Cup since 1999. The search for the next head coach will now begin as the franchise looks to bounce back from an early playoff exit.
As the Stars move forward, the focus will shift not only to finding a new coach but also to how the team can evolve to compete at the highest level and fulfill their championship aspirations.
