DALLAS, Texas — Veteran pass rusher Dante Fowler is making his way back to the Dallas Cowboys after a brief stint with the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys and Fowler finalized a one-year contract worth up to $8 million on March 14, 2025, according to multiple reports including Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Fowler, 30, previously played for the Cowboys during the 2022 and 2023 seasons and was an integral part of their defensive line. In those two seasons with Dallas, he recorded a total of 10 sacks, including six in 2022. His pivotal return comes as the Cowboys look to strengthen their edge rush following the departure of DeMarcus Lawrence, who signed with another team, and the uncertainty surrounding Sam Williams’ recovery from an ACL tear.

During the 2024 season in Washington, Fowler had a career resurgence, recording 10.5 sacks, a significant accomplishment that marked his second-highest total in a nine-season career. He also contributed 14 tackles for loss, showcasing his capability as an effective edge rusher. “I had a great experience in Dallas, and I’m ready to help this team compete for a championship,” Fowler said in a statement following the announcement.

Fowler’s previous success with the Cowboys included solid contributions as a rotational pass rusher. He did not log any starts during his first tenure in Dallas but consistently demonstrated his ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. Head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Fowler’s experience and skills would be valuable assets to the team, which is now eyeing potential further upgrades at the edge position during the offseason.

Fowler was originally drafted third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2015 NFL Draft. Over his career, he has also played for the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons, contributing to each team’s defensive efforts. His return to Dallas signals a commitment to solidify the Cowboys’ defensive front as they prepare for the upcoming season.
