David Montgomery Returns as Lions Gear Up for Playoff Showdown
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery, who was feared lost for the season after suffering a knee injury, returned to full practice Tuesday ahead of the team’s NFC divisional round matchup against the Washington Commanders. Montgomery’s comeback comes at a critical time as the Lions aim to advance in the playoffs.
Montgomery, who tore his MCL earlier this season, opted against surgery and has been working his way back to full strength. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Montgomery’s availability for Saturday’s game, stating, “There will be a place for him in this game. It’s going to be good to get him back.”
Montgomery’s return bolsters a Lions backfield that has relied heavily on rookie Jahmyr Gibbs during his absence. Gibbs has been on a tear, amassing 487 total yards and six touchdowns in the three games Montgomery missed. The duo is expected to form a formidable one-two punch against a Washington defense that ranks among the league’s worst against the run.
“No. 5’s a big part of us,” Campbell said of Montgomery. “He’s a bellcow, a tone-setter, and a catalyst. There’s a place for him here, and there’ll be a place for him in this game.”
While Montgomery’s return is a significant boost, the Lions face uncertainty with other key players. Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who suffered a foot injury in the regular-season finale, was a full participant in practice and is expected to play. However, veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler, who sustained a hamstring injury, did not practice and is unlikely to suit up.
Arnold expressed confidence in his availability after the Lions’ Week 18 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. When asked if he expected to play, Arnold replied, “Come on, man. You know the answer to that question.”
On the defensive side, the Lions will be without defensive lineman Pat O’Connor, who has been a rotational player in recent weeks. His absence could open opportunities for Jonah Williams or Myles Adams to step into the rotation.
The Lions’ offense will also lean on standout tight end Sam LaPorta, who has been a key target for quarterback Jared Goff. LaPorta has recorded 29 catches for 335 yards and two touchdowns in his last five games, solidifying his role as a go-to option in the passing game.
As the Lions prepare for their playoff clash, Montgomery’s return adds a layer of optimism to a team looking to make a deep postseason run. “It’ll mean a lot,” Campbell said. “He’s a huge part of us, and we’re excited to have him back.”
