The New York Mets have experienced an exhilarating week, marked by standout performances that have cemented their playoff position. This week’s highlights began with Francisco Lindor‘s memorable home run against the Atlanta Braves, securing the team’s playoff berth. Additionally, Pete Alonso‘s redemption arc brought further drama to the Mets’ impressive series of games.

Amidst the excitement, one player’s contributions particularly stand out: David Peterson. Despite being somewhat overlooked, Peterson has proven to be one of the club’s most consistent pitchers throughout the season. He made 21 starts, securing a 10-3 record and finishing with a commendable 2.90 ERA. While advanced metrics didn’t fully favor him, primarily due to a lower strikeout rate and a tendency for frequent walks, his success lay in his ability to prevent home runs. Notably, Peterson has not surrendered a home run since August 29th, maintaining this streak through some uneven performances.

This past week underscored Peterson’s value as he took on various roles that have been crucial for the Mets. His string of contributions began with a stellar performance against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, where he pitched seven innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out eight batters. The victory over the Brewers set the stage for a pivotal series against the Atlanta Braves, where only one more win was needed by the Mets to solidify their playoff spot.

During the Game 3 finale against the Brewers, Peterson demonstrated his flexibility by stepping into a closer role, effectively substituting for the unavailable Edwin Diaz. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called upon him to achieve the final three outs, and he delivered seamlessly, claiming his first save in his 17th relief appearance in Major League Baseball.

In the following game, the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, Peterson once again displayed his versatility. With the goal of keeping innings to approximately 30 pitches from starter Kodai Senga, Peterson was prepared to fulfill the missing innings requirement. Over three innings, he allowed just one hit and impressed further with his composure despite issuing three walks, ultimately delivering the scoreless innings the Mets needed.

With the Mets advancing in the playoffs, speculation has arisen concerning Peterson’s role in upcoming games. While it seems unlikely he will be starting, given the team’s current strategy, there is potential for him to continue making impactful shorter appearances, especially in tandem with other pitchers like Senga. Peterson’s ability to adapt and excel in various capacities highlights his value to the team as they prepare for further postseason challenges.
