Dawn Staley Celebrates Statue Unveiling Amid Coaching Triumphs

Columbia, South Carolina — Dawn Staley, head coach of the South Carolina women’s basketball team, has described the unveiling of her statue as “unimaginable”. The statue, which depicts her holding a basketball net, honors her incredible achievements in college basketball, including three national championships since 2017.
The statue’s unveiling took place after Staley led South Carolina back to the national championship game, despite the team losing significant players over the past seasons. After losing five starters following their 2023 Final Four run, they rebounded the next year to secure another championship appearance.
Staley’s coaching career has solidified her reputation as one of the most celebrated figures in women’s basketball. After excelling as a point guard, Staley transitioned to coaching, starting at Temple University in 2000, where she captured six NCAA tournament berths. In 2008, she took the helm at South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to numerous accolades, including SEC titles.
Reflecting on the significance of the statue, Staley stated, “It speaks to the book, ‘Uncommon Favor.’ I didn’t ever have a goal of having a statue, but now, other little girls can grow up and say, ‘I want a statue.’”
During her illustrious playing career, Staley was a standout at the University of Virginia, where she remained a prolific scorer and a two-time ACC Female Athlete of the Year. She retired from professional play with notable accolades, including a WNBA Finals appearance and several Hall of Fame inductions.
Staley’s dedication to the sport continues to inspire young players as she shapes the future of women’s basketball through her coaching and her lasting legacy.
