Daytona 500 Qualifying Nascar Race Cars

CONCORD, N.C. – The NASCAR Cup Series revs into high gear this week with the start of Daytona 500 qualifying. The coveted event takes place at Daytona International Speedway, where drivers will vie for a coveted spot in NASCAR’s most prestigious race on Sunday, Feb. 16.

Qualifying kicks off tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET, determining the pole position and the outside pole for the 67th running of the Daytona 500. During this single-car session, each driver will take one lap around the 2.5-mile track. The top ten fastest drivers will earn a second lap to secure their starting spot.

“Every driver dreams of holding the Harley J. Earl Trophy,” said NASCAR veteran Jimmie Johnson, a two-time Daytona 500 champion. “It’s about pride, legacy, and the thrill of competition.”

The remaining positions in the 500 field will be finalized during two 150-mile qualifying races, scheduled for Thursday. With a record entry list of 45 drivers this year, only 40 or 41 will secure spots in the Monday race, depending on qualifying results and the duels.

Among the notable entries, Martin Truex Jr., a former Cup champion, returns for a one-off ride with TRICON Garage. Meanwhile, four-time Indy 500 winner Hélio Castroneves makes his NASCAR debut for Trackhouse Racing. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will also step in as an owner this time, overseeing reigning Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier behind the wheel.

<p“The excitement builds every year,” said NASCAR analyst Clint Bowyer. “This race sets the stage for the entire season. Everyone wants to start strong.”

The race will be broadcast nationally on FS1, with streaming options available through various platforms like YouTube TV and Hulu+. The Daytona 500 pre-race festivities begin at 2:15 p.m. ET on Sunday, followed by the green flag at 3:11 p.m. ET.

Weather forecasts indicate a slight chance of rain on the day of the race, with a reported 56% likelihood of precipitation. While rain can halt the race, officials are prepared to dry the track for nighttime racing if necessary. The Daytona 500 has been delayed three times since 2012 due to rain.

<p“As always, the weather adds an element of unpredictability to the Daytona 500, which only intensifies the anticipation,” said Bowyer.

Excitement around the event heightens with a range of potential contenders. Past champions such as Denny Hamlin and William Byron are likely favorites, while other strong competitors include Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric. Each driver aims for not just victory, but the added honor that comes with winning this legendary race.

As the cars take to the track tonight, fans and participants alike brace for what promises to be a competitive week leading to the Daytona 500.
