Dean Pees Returns to Baltimore Ravens as Senior Advisor
First-year Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr has announced that Dean Pees, a seasoned figure in NFL coaching, is rejoining the team in the capacity of a senior advisor. This move marks yet another return for Pees, who was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, during which time Orr served as a linebacker under his leadership for three seasons.
Speaking to Jeff Zrebiec of TheAthletic.com, Orr expressed his admiration for Pees, saying, “He’s a guy who knows me as a person, knows the system, knows the culture here. He’s a Raven.” This appointment brings back a figure well-versed in the team’s dynamics and defensive strategies.
Pees, aged 75, originally announced his retirement from the NFL in January 2020. However, his retirements have often been short-lived. He was previously persuaded to join Mike Vrabel at the Tennessee Titans as defensive coordinator and later took the same role with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021, before retiring again in January 2023.
Throughout his career, Pees has accumulated over 50 years of coaching experience across various levels, from high school through to the professional ranks. His career began in earnest in 1998 when he was appointed head coach at Kent State University, although he faced challenging seasons with the team, resulting in a 17-51 record over six seasons.
Pees’ résumé includes collaborations with some of the top names in football, including Lou Holtz, Nick Saban, Bill Belichick, and John Harbaugh. This diverse experience across different styles and tactics has contributed to his reputation as a highly decorated and knowledgeable coach.
The Ravens are hopeful that Pees’ extensive experience, which includes his tenure with the Titans where he made significant defensive strides, will help them compete effectively in the AFC Wild Card hunt, alongside teams like Tennessee. His return is anticipated to bring valuable insights and tactical expertise to the Ravens’ defensive strategies.
