For nearly two decades, football enthusiasts worldwide have engaged in debates about who the best player is in the sport. As the era dominated by two football legends comes to a close, with their careers drawing to an end in Europe, new stars have emerged to fill their shoes.

Among these rising stars are Real Madrid‘s Kylian Mbappe and Manchester City‘s Erling Haaland. Both players have captivated audiences with their exceptional skills on the field, leading many to discuss who might ultimately assume the mantle of the world’s best player. Manchester United legend and football pundit Rio Ferdinand is among those engaging in this discussion.

Ferdinand, who enjoyed a celebrated career with Manchester United, drawing from his extensive experience both on the field and as a pundit for TNT Sport, has weighed in on the comparison. During a broadcast following Manchester City’s draw with RB Leipzig in 2023, he commented, “They’re two obviously great players. But Haaland needs a team to create him goals. Mbappe does as well, but he can also go and create goals on his own and take the game by the scruff of the neck. I’m taking Mbappe.”

Owen Hargreaves, also a former Manchester United player and current pundit, agreed with Ferdinand, adding, “I’m taking Mbappe (too), everybody is. Haaland is a brilliant finisher, but Mbappe can do things on his own, like he did in the World Cup final (2022).”

Statistical comparisons reveal Mbappe’s multifaceted approach to gameplay. With 126 assists in 380 club games, he demonstrates a proficiency for teamwork in addition to his scoring capability, marking 293 goals in 380 club appearances. His ability to deliver and play across the front three makes him a versatile threat, both as a scorer and provider.

On the other hand, Haaland stands out for his exceptional finishing prowess. With a scoring rate of nearly a goal per game for both club and country, he continues to excel as a striker within a structured team framework, focused on concluding plays.

Despite these distinctions, both players have their unique strengths and challenges. While Haaland has been criticized for occasional invisibility during big matches, such as Manchester City’s clashes against elite teams where offensive plays are limited, his record-breaking goal tally in the Premier League underscores his talent.

The ongoing debate reflects the evolving dynamics within international football, as new talents step into the spotlight, continuing to inspire discussions about the future of the sport.
