Debate Over Alexander-Arnold’s Position Continues Ahead of England’s Clash
Greece international Kostas Tsimikas has expressed admiration for his Liverpool teammate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, praising the defender’s recent performances in the right-back position for England. Speaking ahead of the UEFA Nations League match between England and Greece, Tsimikas asserted that Alexander-Arnold’s achievements are self-evident, particularly in light of his fluctuating role within the national team under previous management.
“For sure it was really hard for him,” Tsimikas commented. “Trent is the kind of guy who wants to play. I’m really happy for him the last couple of games. He plays and always delivers. The numbers in Liverpool speak for themselves. In my opinion, he is the No. 1.”
During Gareth Southgate’s tenure as England’s manager, Alexander-Arnold frequently found himself shifted into various midfield roles and was even omitted from several squads, as Southgate typically favored Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier at right-back. However, interim manager Lee Carsley has restored him to his familiar right-back slot, a move welcomed by many of his advocates.
England is set to encounter a familiar face in Tsimikas, who has accumulated over 50 appearances for Liverpool since his transfer from Olympiacos in 2020. The Greek defender is wary of the formidable challenge posed by England, who were runners-up in Euro 2024. “Of course, everybody knows England has the best talent in the world,” he remarked. “I played against many of them for Liverpool, so I know them quite well. We have to give absolutely everything to be 2000 percent ready and focused.”
Tsimikas singled out young midfielder Cole Palmer, noting his impressive performances at Chelsea, and emphasized the need for Greece to be vigilant from the start if Palmer takes the field. “Cole Palmer is personally one of the players I like the most. He always delivers. If he plays, we have to be spot on from minute one,” said Tsimikas.
Greece’s coach, Ivan Jovanovic, acknowledged the shifting dynamics within the England squad following Southgate’s departure, while recognizing Carsley’s influence in fostering a more possession-based approach. “Southgate did a lot for English football,” Jovanovic conceded. “However, the style has changed slightly under Lee Carsley. He has instilled a bit more of a possession-based style and the players have a bit more creative freedom.”
The anticipation for the match at Wembley is palpable, serving as a significant barometer for both teams’ current form. “Wembley is a symbol of world football,” added Jovanovic. “But the team is not here for tourism, they have a match to play. England being one of the best teams in the world, it’s a good measuring stick to see how the team measures up compared to the teams we’ve already played.”
