Glen Allen, Virginia – Deep Run High School’s girls soccer team secured a trip to the state finals by defeating Yorktown 2-0 on Friday, June 13, in the Class 6 semifinals. The victory marked another step for the Wildcats, who last won a state title in 2013.

Deep Run’s Bella Villasana scored both goals in the match, showcasing her skill in front of the net. The team now has a record of 20-1 this season and will face South County in the championship match at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The match experienced delays due to heat-related issues and medical emergencies, pushing the start time to 1:30 p.m. Players were required to take frequent water breaks to combat the high temperatures. “We just have to control the controllables,” said Wildcats coach Steve Chapman.

Despite the challenges, Deep Run dominated the game, especially in the second half. Villasana opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and later added her second goal in the 72nd minute, sealing the win for her team. Yorktown struggled to convert opportunities, with standout performances from their goalie, Elena Schultz, who made several key saves.

Deep Run’s defense held firm, preventing Yorktown from posing serious threats. “It’s always tough to stop a player like Villasana,” said Chapman. “She really wore them down.”

With this win, Deep Run looks forward to their championship game, aiming to reclaim the state title. “It would be wonderful to finally win the state championship that we’ve been so close to for years,” Chapman added.
