DeMar DeRozan Shines Despite Loss as Kings Fall to Nuggets

DENVER, Colorado — The Sacramento Kings faced off against the Denver Nuggets on March 5, 2025, in a tightly contested game that saw DeMar DeRozan rise to the occasion despite missing two key teammates. The Kings fell to the Nuggets 116-110, but the performance of DeRozan captured attention.
Despite being without all-star Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk, Sacramento surged ahead with a strong start, taking a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter. However, the Nuggets mounted a comeback, tightening the score as the game progressed.
With the absence of two starters, the Kings turned to DeRozan for leadership, and he did not disappoint. DeRozan scored 33 points, becoming the offensive backbone of the team during crucial moments. His performance included a historic three-pointer that surpassed Patrick Ewing, placing him 27th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
DeRozan, acquired by the Kings in a sign-and-trade deal with the Chicago Bulls, has been instrumental for Sacramento this season. Averaging 21.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists with a shooting percentage of 48.9%, the 35-year-old forward continues to demonstrate he is still a formidable player in the league.
“I’m just trying to help the team win, whether it’s scoring or making plays,” DeRozan said after the game. “We battled hard tonight, but we have to find a way to finish games.”
DeRozan’s experience may prove crucial as the Kings aim for a deep playoff run. He now ranks sixth among active players in total points scored, just behind Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry on the all-time list.
The match highlighted how quickly the competitive nature of the NBA can shift. The Nuggets capitalized on key opportunities, particularly in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Kings 32-17. They also earned a significant advantage in free throws, attempting 30 compared to Sacramento’s 14.
Following the match, DeRozan criticized the officiating, stating, “The refs were terrible. Terrible as—. Simple as that.” The league responded by announcing a $25,000 fine for DeRozan for his comments.
The Kings will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game, hoping that continued strong performances from DeRozan will keep them competitive even in the face of adversity.
