Denmark Coach Boosts Chido Obi’s Debut Hopes After Manchester United Surge

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Denmark national team head coach Brian Riemer expressed optimism regarding the chances of Chido Obi, a rising star at Manchester United, making his international debut. Riemer stated that the young forward’s prospects have grown significantly since the last assessment a few months ago.
Obi, who joined United from Arsenal over the summer, has emerged as a key player at youth level, netting 12 goals and adding two assists across various competitions, including the FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2, U18 Premier League, and the UEFA Youth League. At just 17 years old, he made his senior debut for United against Tottenham Hotspur, followed by a performance against Everton.
Despite being an unused substitute in the recent matchup against Ipswich Town, Obi is anticipated to participate in United’s FA Cup clash against Fulham at Old Trafford. His status has ignited discussions around a swift transition to the senior national team, particularly as he is also eligible to represent Nigeria.
Riemer remarked on Obi’s situation during an interview with Viaplay, highlighting the excitement surrounding the player. ‘Chido is a player who has played on our U18 national team, so it has become even stronger,’ he said. Riemer emphasized the importance of careful progression in the player’s development. ‘We have so many young players… it’s important to say that we have many knocking on the door,’ he added.
While there is a growing demand for Obi’s inclusion in the senior national squad, Riemer noted the necessity for him to gain more playing time at his club before making the leap. ‘You need to come in and play more regularly before the senior national team is an option for you,’ he explained.
This weekend’s match against Fulham kicks off at 16:30 GMT, and Obi hopes to earn playing time in a crucial match for United.
Meanwhile, Obi’s absence from the Manchester United U18 squad in recent high-profile clashes has underlined his increasing significance to the senior team. Previously, he has been proactive in supporting his teammates, as evidenced by his enthusiastic social media interactions following a recent U18 victory against Arsenal.
Riemer’s strategy includes maintaining a balance between nurturing young talents and ensuring they mature into the senior ranks effectively. ‘The senior national team requires one more step,’ he concluded, highlighting the challenges that lies ahead for the promising striker.
