The Denver Nuggets are set to begin their 2024-25 NBA season on Thursday night, hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder at home. This game marks the official debut of nine-time NBA All-Star and 2017 league MVP Russell Westbrook with the Nuggets. Signed in free agency this summer, Westbrook will start the season as Denver’s backup point guard.

During the preseason, Westbrook made a strong impression, averaging 11.3 points, 6.3 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per game across three appearances. He also showed promise from beyond the arc, converting on five of his nine three-point attempts.

Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. expressed optimism about Westbrook’s integration into the team, noting that head coach Michael Malone is allowing Westbrook to play to his strengths. ‘I think coach Malone is letting Russ be Russ,’ Porter said, ‘… and I think Russ is enjoying it.’ This approach is a contrast to Westbrook’s recent stint with the LA Clippers, where he was often playing out of position after the team acquired James Harden.

The Nuggets are looking to build on their successful previous season, where they tied a franchise record for most wins. The team has addressed a significant weakness from last year by bolstering their bench, which is expected to improve their overall efficiency and performance.

Coach Michael Malone emphasized the importance of continuity and chemistry among the team, highlighting the benefits of having a core group of players who have been together for several years. This continuity is expected to contribute to the team’s confidence and performance on the court.
