Denzel Ward and the Challenges of Being a Cornerback Opposite a Star
Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward, a three-time Pro Bowler, has been making significant contributions to his team’s defense this season. Despite not being targeted as frequently as his counterpart, Martin Emerson Jr., Ward has managed to lead the league with 17 pass breakups, along with an interception and a forced fumble and recovery.
Ward’s performance is a testament to his skill and the trust placed in him by the Browns’ defensive scheme. In an interview, Ward attributed his success this season to his hard work and the system in place. “It all had to do with” the preparation and the defensive strategy, he said.
Martin Emerson Jr., who lines up opposite Ward, has also been pivotal. Emerson has been the nearest defender on 57 targets, which is tops on the Cleveland Browns and tied for 20th in the league. He has over twice as many tackles as Ward (49-20) and has added two tackles for a loss, five passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a recovery to his stats.
The strong bond between Ward and Emerson is evident both on and off the field. The two cornerbacks work out together in the offseason in Florida and have developed a brotherly relationship. Emerson praised Ward, saying, “He is most definitely a brother and somebody that I will know a long time after football”.
The Browns’ defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, typically keeps the outside cornerbacks on one side, rather than having them follow the top receiver. This strategy has allowed both Ward and Emerson to excel in their roles and contribute significantly to the team’s defensive performance).
