Derek Carr’s Injury Status Looms Over Saints Before 2025 NFL Season

New Orleans, Louisiana — The future of four-time Pro Bowler Derek Carr remains uncertain as the New Orleans Saints prepare for the 2025 NFL season. Carr has been dealing with a shoulder injury that has raised questions about his availability.
According to NFL Network‘s Jane Slater, Carr recently visited New Orleans twice to meet with team doctors regarding his shoulder problem. He injured his throwing shoulder during the Saints’ Week 14 game against the New York Giants. Slater noted that Carr had not resumed significant throwing until spring, as he prepared for offseason activities.
“He believes he injured his throwing shoulder in the same game he injured his left wrist,” Slater explained in her update. “Unfortunately, prior to that, he only threw in walkthroughs.” It appears that Carr has refrained from surgery due to previous procedures on the same arm as he weighs his options.
While discussing Carr’s situation, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported, “Derek Carr would like to not have surgery. He would like to rehab and get back on the field for Week 1. However, a firm decision has not been made.” If Carr does opt for surgery, it could sideline him for a significant period.
The Saints made headlines in the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round, adding depth to a quarterback room that already includes Carr. The team’s choices show a commitment to building for the future, especially with Carr’s injury status still unresolved.
Furthermore, the Saints’ first-round pick was offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., a move that adds more strength to the offensive line for whoever starts as quarterback. Recent insights indicate that Banks is viewed as a potential star by scouts, likening him to five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil.
As the Saints navigate Carr’s injury, the upcoming months look crucial for both him and Shough. The situation is evolving, and fans will be eager for updates as the season approaches.
