OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — DeMar DeRozan‘s frustration boiled over following the Sacramento Kings‘ 116-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets on March 5, resulting in a $25,000 fine from the NBA for his postgame criticism of the officiating.

After the game, DeRozan did not mince words about the referees, stating, “The refs were terrible; terrible as. It’s as simple as that.” His candid remarks highlighted the perception that critical calls were negatively impacting Sacramento’s performance.

The Kings, now 32-29, struggled to maintain control during the match, despite DeRozan’s impressive output of 35 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Jonas Valančiūnas contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Zach LaVine added 20 points and six assists. However, even significant individual performances could not overcome Denver, who improved to 40-22.

DeRozan’s comments did not sit well with NBA executives, who are known to impose fines on players for public criticism of officials. The league maintains zero tolerance for such behavior to uphold the integrity of the game. “The NBA protects its officials, and anytime a player crosses the line, their bank account takes a hit,” a source close to the situation said.

This fine marks a growing trend within the league, as star players are being held accountable for unsportsmanlike conduct. Shortly after DeRozan’s incident, the NBA also fined Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards and Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant, totaling $85,000 for similar issues.

Despite the setback, DeRozan expressed his belief that speaking out was necessary. “When questionable officiating impacts the outcome, emotions are bound to spill over,” he said. With the Kings fighting for a playoff spot, DeRozan emphasized the importance of every game and the pressures players face on the court.

In the aftermath of the fine, the Kings bounced back with a decisive victory over the San Antonio Spurs, reigniting hopes for a winning streak. This performance could signal a turning point as the team seeks to avoid the Play-In Tournament and secure a more favorable playoff position.

“We’re focused on getting in rhythm,” DeRozan said after the Spurs game. “Every game counts now, and we need to come together as a team.” As the NBA season progresses, all eyes will be on DeRozan and the Kings to see if they can capitalize on their momentum and make a push for the postseason.
