Derrick Nnadi Signs With Jets After Seven Seasons With Chiefs

NEW YORK, March 16, 2025 — Defensive lineman Derrick Nnadi has officially signed with the New York Jets, leaving behind the Kansas City Chiefs after seven seasons. His agents announced the agreement on Sunday, though they did not disclose the terms of the contract.
Nnadi, a former third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft from Florida State, has been a significant contributor to the Chiefs, starting 86 regular season games and playing a pivotal role in three Super Bowl victories. He totaled 233 tackles, five sacks, and a forced fumble during his time with the team. However, Nnadi transitioned into a reserve role in 2024, starting only one of the 17 games he played.
The move to the Jets presents a fresh opportunity for Nnadi, who is looking to secure a starting position on New York’s defensive line. As an essential part of Kansas City’s defense, he previously formed a solid partnership with All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones. During his last season with the Chiefs, he recorded 11 combined tackles and a postseason sack.
“It’s definitely bittersweet to leave Kansas City after all these years, but I’m excited for this new chapter with the Jets,” Nnadi stated. “I hope to bring my experience and skills to help this team compete at the highest level.”
While the Chiefs have been active in the offseason, re-signing key players like Nick Bolton and bringing in Jaylon Moore to bolster the protection for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, they opted to let Nnadi test free agency. His departure marks a notable change in the Chiefs’ lineup and could lead to adjustments in their strategies moving forward.
The Jets have aimed to improve their interior defensive line as they look to enhance their defensive capabilities. Nnadi is expected to provide run-stopping depth, a quality that has characterized his career, despite his recent decline in on-field production. Over recent seasons, his run-defense grades and efficiency have slipped, raising questions about his capacity to reclaim his earlier form.
“We believe Derrick can rediscover his peak performance here with the Jets,” said a source within the Jets’ organization. “His unique skill set will help solidify our defensive strategy.”
Nnadi’s signing marks the second addition to the Jets’ defensive tackle roster during free agency, with the team also acquiring a player from another franchise. The Jets’ current lineup includes Quinnen Williams, Leonard Taylor III, and Phidarian Mathis, alongside Nnadi and another recent addition.
As the 2025 NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on how Nnadi adjusts to his new role in New York and whether he can replicate the success he enjoyed with the Chiefs.
