GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Former Charlotte 49ers quarterback DeShawn Purdie has withdrawn his signed transfer documents to join the Florida Gators, re-entering the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, Jan. 13, according to On3 analyst Pete Nakos.

Purdie, a three-star recruit from the class of 2024, initially committed to Florida on Dec. 22 after entering the transfer portal. However, he reversed his decision just weeks later, leaving the Gators without a potential contender for their No. 2 quarterback spot behind returning starter DJ Lagway.

As a true freshman at Charlotte, Purdie completed 100 of 200 passes for 1,802 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Despite limited mobility, his performance showcased potential, making him a sought-after transfer target.

Florida had hoped Purdie could challenge for the backup role and eventually compete for the starting job in 2027. His withdrawal leaves the Gators with 2025 four-star signee Ryan Montgomery and returnees Max Brown and Jack Miller III as their primary quarterback options.

Purdie’s decision also impacts Georgia, which had pursued him earlier in the transfer process. According to NCAA rules, once a player signs a grant of aid with an SEC school, other SEC programs cannot contact them, even if they are released. This restriction prevents Georgia from re-engaging with Purdie.

“The coaching and their drive to be great. They have a good chip on their shoulder,” Purdie told On3 about his official visit to Florida. “The coaching staff and players, I loved to see them work, how they come together, have fun at practice, and everyone comes together as one.”

The NCAA Transfer Portal, a private database for student-athletes seeking to transfer, allows players to withdraw their names at any time. However, once a player enters the portal, their current scholarship is no longer guaranteed, even if they decide to stay.

Florida’s quarterback depth remains a priority as the program looks to build for the future. Meanwhile, Purdie’s next destination remains uncertain as he re-enters the transfer market.
