Detroit Lions Acquire Za’Darius Smith in Trade with Cleveland Browns
The Detroit Lions have successfully completed a trade with the Cleveland Browns to acquire edge rusher Za'Darius Smith, bolstering their pass rush ahead of the NFL trade deadline. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Browns are trading Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Lions in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Smith, 32, has been a key target for the Lions, who have been actively pursuing him to strengthen their defensive line. Despite initial reports suggesting a potential trade could happen earlier, the deal was finalized on Tuesday. Smith has had a productive season so far, tallying five sacks in nine games for the Browns.
The trade negotiations had been ongoing, with the Browns seeking an early Day 3 pick, such as a fourth-round pick. However, the Lions managed to secure the deal with the agreed-upon draft picks. The Browns were also waiting to see if other teams would enter the picture, but ultimately, the Lions’ offer prevailed.
This acquisition is significant for the Lions, as it addresses a critical need for an edge rusher and could potentially impact their performance in the remainder of the season. Smith’s experience and skillset are expected to make an immediate impact on the Lions’ defense.
