Detroit Lions Enter New Era with Coaching Shake-Up and Roster Decisions
DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions are entering a new chapter in 2025 following significant coaching changes and roster decisions that could reshape the team’s identity. With offensive coordinator Ben Johnson departing to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn leaving for the New York Jets, the Lions are turning to familiar faces to lead their units.
On offense, the Lions are expected to lean on the system implemented by new coordinator Morton, who previously worked with Johnson as an offensive consultant in 2022. Morton’s approach emphasizes downfield passing and play-action, a shift from the Lions’ recent reliance on short passes and screens. According to TruMedia, the Denver Broncos, where Morton served as passing game coordinator in 2024, ranked ninth in the NFL with 22.3% of their pass attempts traveling 15 or more air yards. In contrast, the Lions ranked 25th in the same category.
This shift could impact the roster, particularly at wide receiver. Veterans Allen Robinson II and Tim Patrick, both signed late in training camp, are competing for a spot. Patrick, who caught 33 passes for 394 yards and three touchdowns in 2024, has an edge due to his familiarity with Morton’s system and his higher average depth of target (11.6 yards) compared to Robinson’s 7.3 yards.
On defense, the Lions promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator. Sheppard, a former NFL linebacker, has been with the Lions since 2021 and has developed the team’s linebacker corps into a strength. Under his guidance, Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez have emerged as reliable starters. Sheppard’s emphasis on versatility and player development aligns with head coach Dan Campbell’s vision for the team.
Sheppard’s promotion comes with high expectations. “Having Shep there with me, he’s been there from the beginning, and he knows exactly how I think,” Glenn said in December. “He’s a damn good coach, he’s fiery, everything that you need as a linebacker coach, he’s that.”
The Lions’ defense will return key players like Alim McNeill, DJ Reader, and Za’Darius Smith on the defensive line, while the secondary features young talent such as Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Sheppard’s ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial as the Lions aim to build on their recent success.
As the Lions prepare for the 2025 season, the coaching changes and roster decisions signal a commitment to evolving while maintaining the core principles that have driven their recent resurgence. Fans will be watching closely to see how these adjustments translate on the field.
