Detroit Lions Eye Free Agent Guards as Zeitler’s Future Remains Uncertain

DETROIT, Mich. — With Kevin Zeitler‘s future uncertain as he approaches free agency, the Detroit Lions are considering various alternatives to bolster their offensive line after a successful 2024 season. Zeitler, who turns 35 on Saturday, has been a pivotal part of the Lions’ line but may seek different opportunities as he enters his 14th NFL season.
The Lions’ management is actively exploring backup plans should Zeitler choose not to return. They currently have several players under contract, including Graham Glasgow, Christian Mahogany, Kingsley Eguakun, and Netane Muti, while Zeitler remains a free agent alongside Michael Niese and Kayode Awosika.
As the Lions prepare for free agency, spending on a young free agent guard may not be the most prudent strategy given their financial commitments at left tackle, center, and right tackle. Instead, a more likely scenario could involve drafting a younger player while exploring veteran options. Among those veteran options, Brandon Scherff stands out as a reliable target. Despite being in the later stages of his career, Scherff has demonstrated consistency, notably allowing zero sacks in 2024.
Lions General Manager Brad Holmes has shown a willingness to pursue players recovering from injuries, making lineman Will Hernandez a consideration. Although Hernandez suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 5, he was excelling prior to that setback. His experience as a pass blocker may not perfectly align with Detroit’s needs; however, his potential as a suitable multi-year option affords the Lions flexibility for future roster decisions.
Another potential target is Dalton Risner, another interior lineman who excelled as a pass blocker last season, achieving a pass-blocking grade that ranked eighth among NFL guards. While not known for his prowess in run blocking, his positional adaptability could suit the Lions’ needs, as they already have options in Mahogany and Glasgow for right guard.
J.R. Brown, who left the Lions for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023, might also be a viable reunion prospect if the team decides to move on from Glasgow. His performance with the Arizona Cardinals last season showcases his adaptability at guard or center, allowing just 20 pressures compared to Glasgow’s 45.
A more nostalgic candidate is Laken Tomlinson, who was drafted by the Lions in 2015. Although his initial tenure in Detroit was not memorable, Tomlinson has since established himself as a dependable player, even making the Pro Bowl in 2021.
Another versatile option is Greg Van Roten, who has filled various roles at interior positions throughout his career. He has started consistently over the past two years and could present a cost-effective choice for a contender.
Lastly, Will Fries emerges as a high-reward candidate. After suffering a tibial injury in Week 5, he is expected to be ready for offseason activities. Fries proved his worth as a starter for the Indianapolis Colts, achieving an impressive 86.9 PFF grade in 2024 prior to his injury. His potential as both a short- and long-term investment could make him an appealing target for the Lions.
