Detroit Lions Sign Veteran QB Kyle Allen to Strengthen Roster

Detroit, MI — The Detroit Lions have officially signed quarterback Kyle Allen, adding depth to their quarterback room as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
Allen, 29, originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers. After a series of moves across several teams, he is set to join the Lions, where he will serve as a backup to Jared Goff. Details of the deal have not been disclosed.
Throughout his career, Allen has had varied success since his initial signing with the Panthers. He started in 12 games during the 2019 season, posting a record of 5-7 while completing 62 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. However, his subsequent performances with Washington and Houston were less favorable, as he went 1-5 in later starts.
In 2023, Allen’s tenure with the Buffalo Bills saw him take the field for seven games before he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played sparingly in Pittsburgh, notably completing one pass for 19 yards in a brief appearance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5.
While with the Steelers, Allen served primarily as the third-string quarterback behind Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. In his sole appearance in 2024, he stepped in briefly for Fields, completing his only pass attempt. Although he faced a challenging training camp, where he recorded a higher interception rate, coaches noted his calm presence and initial accuracy during practices.
With the Lions, Allen faces competition for the backup role against Hendon Hooker, a third-round pick in 2023 who had limited action in 2024. Hooker completed six of nine pass attempts in his appearances, while Allen brings considerable experience from his previous stints.
In total, Allen has participated in 31 games with 19 starts across his career, completing 62.7 percent of his passes for over 4,700 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. The Lions are hoping his professional experience will provide valuable support as they seek to build on their previous seasons.
