Devils’ Top Prospect Simon Nemec Expresses Frustration Over AHL Stint
UTICA, N.Y. — Simon Nemec, the New Jersey Devils‘ top defensive prospect, has voiced frustration over his continued assignment to the American Hockey League (AHL), hinting at potential trade discussions if his situation does not change. The 20-year-old Slovakian defenseman, drafted second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, made the comments in an interview with Slovak sports outlet .
“It’s hard to say, it’s still too early to request a trade,” Nemec told reporter Tomáš Prokop. “If this situation continues, it will have to be addressed, but for now, this is how it stands.” The remarks have raised eyebrows among Devils fans and analysts, though the organization maintains there is no frustration on Nemec’s part beyond disappointment at not being in the NHL.
An internal Devils source told New Jersey Hockey Now, “No. [We’re] not aware of any frustrations. Disappointment for not being in NHL, yes.” The source added that communication with Nemec has been frequent and transparent, emphasizing that the young defenseman understands the areas he needs to improve.
Nemec’s season began with adversity after he suffered an upper-body injury during the 2026 Olympic qualifiers while representing Slovakia. Despite the setback, he made the Devils’ roster for the start of the 2024-25 season, appearing in the team’s first nine games. However, his performance fell short of expectations, leading to his reassignment to the Utica Comets, New Jersey’s AHL affiliate.
Since joining the Comets, Nemec has regained his form, recently tallying five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in a 7-3 victory over the Hartford Wolfpack. Over his last 10 games, he has recorded 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists), showcasing his readiness for a return to the NHL. “I believe I’ve proven multiple times that I belong in the NHL,” Nemec said. “I just have to wait for another chance and grab it when it comes.”
The Devils’ defensive depth has complicated Nemec’s path to the NHL. With a roster featuring , Luke Hughes, Brett Pesce, Brendan Dillon, and Jonas Siegenthaler, opportunities for the young defenseman remain limited. General Manager Tom Fitzgerald acknowledged the team’s crowded blue line in December, stating that contract talks with key pending free agents, including , would begin after the new year.
Nemec’s recent resurgence in the AHL has reignited discussions about his future. While the Devils appear committed to his development, the possibility of a trade request looms if his NHL aspirations remain unfulfilled. For now, Nemec remains focused on proving his worth in Utica, waiting for the next opportunity to make his mark in the NHL.
