Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as Ashadi Ekadashi, holds great religious significance in the Hindu culture. Celebrated during the Aashaadh Shukla Paksha, the festival primarily takes place in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, marking the time when he enters a deep sleep in the cosmic ocean of milk on the serpent Shesha.

According to the Drik Panchang, Devshayani Ekadashi is also called Padma Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi, and Hari Shayani Ekadashi. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu rests in a state of Yoga Nidra until the end of Chaturmas, awakening on Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Devotees observe a fast on Ashadi Ekadashi, refraining from consuming grains. They engage in prayers, visit Vishnu temples, and partake in special rituals. In Maharashtra, the festival is closely linked with the Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage, where devotees called Warkaris undertake a journey to the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur.

The Wari pilgrimage commences from various locations in Maharashtra and concludes on Ashadi Ekadashi. It is a profound spiritual journey filled with devotion and fervor, symbolizing the devotees’ commitment to Lord Vithoba. The festival in Pandharpur witnesses a large congregation of devotees who come together to seek blessings and celebrate this auspicious occasion.
