Dick Vitale Returns to ESPN, Receives Warm Welcome at Clemson Game

Clemson, S.C. — ESPN commentator Dick Vitale was warmly welcomed back to the broadcast booth Saturday night at Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum, marking his first game since overcoming cancer for the fourth time.
As the crowd erupted in applause about 30 minutes before Clemson’s game against Duke, Vitale made his way courtside, where the public address announcer humorously channeled his famous catchphrase, exclaiming, ‘Dickie V, you’re awesome, baby!’ Fans stood and cheered for nearly a minute, celebrating the beloved sports commentator’s return.
The 85-year-old Vitale had not called a game for ESPN in two years due to health struggles, including a battle with vocal cord cancer. He shared the joyous news of being cancer-free in late December, expressing his gratitude to supporters. ‘SANTA CLAUS came early as Dr. Rick Brown called & said that my PET SCAN at 7 AM came back CLEAN OF CANCER!’ he declared on X, formerly known as Twitter. ‘OMG thanks so much to ALL of YOU for your prayers. Yes I’m cutting the nets down baby, it’s my National Championship!’
Vitale’s journey has included surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck, along with previous treatments for melanoma and lymphoma. His resilience and commitment to sports commentary have resonated with fans and colleagues alike.
During his absence, fellow commentators and basketball fans have expressed their admiration for Vitale’s long-lasting impact on the sports broadcasting industry. His return not only marks a personal victory but also revitalizes the spirit of college basketball commentary, igniting moments of joy and enthusiasm that he is known for.
