Dillon Mitchell Joins St. John’s to Boost Defense and Rebounding

QUEENS, N.Y. — St. John’s University has made a significant addition to its basketball program with the transfer of Dillon Mitchell from Cincinnati, the player confirmed to The Post on Wednesday morning. The 6-foot-8 forward from Tampa, Florida, is known for his elite athleticism and defensive skills.
Mitchell aims to enhance St. John’s defensive prowess while pairing well with the recent perimeter shooting upgrades under Coach Rick Pitino. He describes himself as an offensive rebounding dynamo, capable of being a lob threat and versatile defender who can guard any position on the floor.
“It was specifically about development and getting put into the right system around the right group of people who are going to push me, make me uncomfortable and just help me get to that next level,” Mitchell said in an interview with The Post.
Another key reason for his decision was the personalized approach he experienced during his visit. He noted how Assistant Coach Steve Masiello and Coach Pitino discussed his weaknesses instead of focusing solely on his strengths. “Them noticing my weaknesses and communicating how they can help me get better with my weaknesses, that was the main thing I was looking at,” Mitchell explained.
This strategic emphasis on development aligns with Coach Pitino’s vision for the team, indicating that St. John’s is not only seeking talent but also prioritizing a comprehensive development plan for its players. Mitchell’s arrival is expected to be a game-changer for the Red Storm as they prepare for the upcoming season.
