Novak Djokovic Miami Open News Conference 2025

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Novak Djokovic expressed a desire for improved player representation and unity in tennis during a news conference at the Miami Open on March 20, 2025. The 24-time Grand Slam champion discussed the Professional Tennis Players Association’s (PTPA) recent class-action lawsuit filed against the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA, which alleges anti-competitive practices.

The lawsuit, submitted in federal court in New York on March 18, claims that the governing bodies of tennis maintain monopolistic control over player earnings and working conditions. Djokovic, who co-founded the PTPA in 2020, was notably not listed among the plaintiffs. “I want other players to step up,” he stated, reinforcing his commitment to athlete advocacy without directly taking a legal position.

Djokovic noted his long-standing advocacy for better player conditions, saying, “I’ve never been a fan and supporter of division in our sport, but I’ve always fought for better representation and influence of players globally.” He added that the current state of affairs regarding player welfare and prize money still leaves much to be desired.

According to the PTPA, over 250 players have voiced support for the lawsuit. However, not all prominent figures in tennis share this view. World number three Carlos Alcaraz expressed his concerns, distanced himself from the PTPA’s actions, and stated he felt unaware that his quotes would be included in the lawsuit filing.

Djokovic conceded that while he supports the goals of the PTPA, he has reservations about the lawsuit’s language. “I found that maybe some wording was quite strong,” he said, indicating his hope that the legal team’s terminology effectively conveys their demands.

Executives from the ATP and WTA criticized the suit, labeling it as divisive and misdirected. The ATP described the PTPA’s claims as damaging to the sport, while the WTA characterized the lawsuit as “unfortunate.”

As he prepared to compete, Djokovic underscored the necessity for unity among players and governing bodies. “I really hope that all the governing bodies will come together and solve these issues,” he emphasized, signaling optimism for a collaborative resolution.

The outcome of this lawsuit may significantly impact the future of professional tennis. Players seek not only a fairer share of revenue but a systemic change that allows for a sustainable and equitable environment in which they can thrive.
