MONACO — Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, gears up for a crucial second-round match against Alejandro Tabilo at the Monte Carlo Masters, following Tabilo’s upset win against 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2025, after Djokovic received a first-round bye.

Tabilo triumphed in his first-round match with a comeback victory, defeating Wawrinka 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Last season, Tabilo claimed a victory over Djokovic at the Italian Open, where Djokovic managed to win only five games in the entire match. Thus, this rematch holds significant importance for the Serbian player, who is looking to avenge his surprising defeat.

Djokovic arrives at the Monte Carlo tournament after a runner-up finish at the Miami Open, where he lost to Jakub Mensik while managing an eye infection. He told reporters, “When you start to lose early in tournaments, that’s when you question yourself,” emphasizing the importance of confidence and motivation in his game.

In other matches on Monday, the ninth-seed Daniil Medvedev battled through cramps to defeat fellow Russian Karen Khachanov 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, securing his spot in the next round. Despite struggling with his service game in the third set, Medvedev managed to convert key break points to clinch victory.

“There’s a lot of tension, and you need to focus deeply,” Medvedev stated, reflecting on the match that lasted almost three hours.

Later in the day, other results included Jack Draper defeating 11th-seed Jannik Sinner 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1, leading to questions about Sinner’s form as he hasn’t won a title since 2022. Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini of Italy secured his place in the second round by defeating Facundo Bagnis 6-4, 6-4.

With the clay-court season commencing, players acknowledge the challenges of competing at a high level as they age. Djokovic, approaching 38, noted, “It has become more difficult to get motivated.” He also spoke about balancing professional life with family time, stating, “I’m trying to find a nice equilibrium.”

Djokovic’s brother, Marko, is stepping in to assist with coaching duties due to the absence of Andy Murray, who is reportedly occupied with personal matters. Djokovic expressed uncertainty about Murray’s whereabouts but appreciates the support from his brother. “He just adds a personal touch to the team,” Djokovic remarked.

The Monte Carlo Masters serves as the first major clay-court tournament of the season, making it vital for players seeking momentum as they head toward the French Open.

As Djokovic looks to reclaim his form, he remains hopeful about finding success in Monte Carlo, where he last won the title in 2015. With Tabilo looming ahead, the tennis world will be watching closely to see if Djokovic can launch his clay-court campaign with a much-needed victory.
