Dodgers’ Conforto Sits Out Home Opener Against Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Outfielder Michael Conforto will not start for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their home opener against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. The decision comes as left-hander Tarik Skubal takes the mound for Detroit, prompting Dodgers manager to place Conforto on the bench.
Instead, rookie Andy Pages will take over in left field, batting ninth in the lineup. Conforto, a 32-year-old left-handed hitter, has struggled against lefty pitchers throughout his career, with a .232 batting average against them compared to .257 against righties.
“We want to maximize our chances against tough left-handed pitching,” Dodgers manager stated in a pregame interview. “Pages has shown promise, and this matchup gives us a better shot on offense,” he added.
In a two-game series held in Tokyo against the Chicago Cubs earlier this month, Conforto recorded a modest .286 average, going 2-for-7 with a double, one walk, and two strikeouts. However, his history against left-handed pitchers raises concerns about his effectiveness, as illustrated by his .705 OPS (on-base plus slugging) against lefties.
The Dodgers open their stateside schedule with high hopes and a roster built for success, featuring a mix of veteran players and promising prospects. In Thursday’s lineup, veteran Miguel Rojas will play at second base, batting eighth, while Tommy Edman will fill the center-field position.
With a talented squad, the Dodgers aim to capitalize on their opportunities while navigating the challenges of a lengthy season, especially as they face formidable pitchers like Skubal.
