PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Clayton Kershaw have reportedly agreed to terms on a new contract for the upcoming season, pending the completion of a physical, according to multiple sources.
Kershaw, a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, was present at Camelback Ranch for the start of Spring Training, participating in workouts with his teammates. The 36-year-old had been a free agent after declining a $10 million player option, but both Kershaw and Dodgers executives expressed confidence throughout the offseason that he would return to the club.
The specifics of the new contract have not yet been released, and the deal remains unofficial until Kershaw passes his physical examination. Given the Dodgers’ need for roster flexibility, they are expected to create space on their 40-man roster, likely by moving some players to the 60-day injured list.
Kershaw’s return comes after an injury-laden previous season, during which he underwent surgeries on his left foot and knee. These procedures followed a shoulder operation the year prior. Last season, Kershaw made only seven starts, finishing with a 2-2 record and a 4.50 ERA in 30 innings pitched.
“The pain in my toe definitely affected my performance,” Kershaw said shortly after the season concluded. “I’m committed to getting back to my best for this season.”
This contract addition means that Kershaw will join a competitive rotation that includes Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow. Expected returns from injuries for pitchers such as Shohei Ohtani and Dustin May also strengthen the Dodgers’ pitching depth.
Kershaw has spent his entire career with the Dodgers since being drafted in 2006. Over his 17 seasons, he has compiled a stellar 212-94 record and a 2.50 ERA, earning a spot among the franchise legends. His last two World Series appearances in 2020 and 2024 have only solidified his status within the organization.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Kershaw will perform in what is expected to be another transformative season for the Dodgers. As one fan put it, “We’ve never doubted Kershaw; he’s the backbone of this team.”
