Dodgers Legend Manny Mota in Stable Condition After Stroke

LOS ANGELES, CA — Dodgers icon Manny Mota is recovering at a local hospital after suffering a stroke Monday night. The 87-year-old baseball legend, who spent 56 years associated with the Dodgers, remained alert and responsive to treatment, according to family reports.
“Dad never lost consciousness during the incident and is currently doing well,” said José Mota, Manny’s son and team broadcaster, in an interview with ESPN Deportes. As of Tuesday morning, Mota was reported to be in stable condition, receiving support and well-wishes from fans and the baseball community.
Mota’s storied career spans parts of two decades in Major League Baseball, including 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He initially signed with the then-New York Giants in 1957 at just 19 years old, launching a career that would see him excel as a player, coach, and broadcaster.
As a player, Mota finished with a .304 batting average, 31 home runs, and 438 RBIs. His notable achievements include selection to the All-Star Game in 1973 and holding an impressive record of 150 pinch hits—a mark that stood for two decades before being surpassed by Lenny Harris in 1999. After retiring in 1982, he transitioned to coaching, a role in which he led the Dodgers for 35 years, earning two World Series titles.
In recognition of his contributions, Mota was inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball in 2023. Reflecting on this honor, he expressed gratitude, stating, “I don’t consider myself a legend, just another person who always tried to contribute to the Dodgers and give my best. I am humbled and really appreciate what the Dodgers are doing for me.”
The baseball community has rallied in support of Mota since news of his stroke emerged. Social media platforms buzzed with messages of encouragement from fans. Comments ranged from, “Prayers for Mr. Mota!” to sentiments like, “Wishing Manny a speed recovery,” underscoring the affection and admiration he has garnered throughout his career.
During his impressive career, Mota played not only for the Dodgers but also had stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos. He was traded to the Dodgers in 1969, where he cemented his legacy and became an essential figure in the organization, serving also as a community representative after his coaching days.
Mota remains a beloved figure in Los Angeles baseball, often regarded for not only his prowess on the field but his character off it. As he continues to recuperate, fans await more updates on this Dodgers legend’s health.
