Dodgers and Padres Perfect to Start 2025 MLB Season

LOS ANGELES, CA — The first week of the 2025 Major League Baseball season has delivered a mix of exciting performances and unexpected struggles. The Los Angeles Dodgers stand undefeated at 8-0, while the San Diego Padres follow closely at 7-0, marking the rare occurrence of two teams starting the season so strongly.
According to research by Sarah Langs, this is just the fifth time in MLB history that multiple teams have begun a season 7-0 or better, with previous occurrences in 2003, 1982, 1962, and 1884.
In the National League West, the Dodgers and Padres have set a fierce pace that other teams are racing to keep up with. The San Francisco Giants also show competitive spirit with a record of 5-1, while the Arizona Diamondbacks sit at 4-3. In stark contrast, the Colorado Rockies trail behind with a current record of 1-5.
As teams look to establish themselves early in the season, attention has also shifted to struggling franchises. The American League Central has noticeably poor performance, with the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, and Minnesota Twins all managing just two victories through the first week.
In another disappointing trend, the Atlanta Braves emerge as the only winless team this season, now at 0-7 after facing both the Dodgers and Padres in their opening matchups. Their lack of runs and offensive production has raised concerns, especially following significant offseason acquisitions that have not yet yielded results.
“It’s early in the season, but as we move forward, it’s clear the competition is heating up in both leagues,” said ESPN analyst Buster Olney. “The Dodgers and Padres have set a high bar, and teams like the Braves face mounting pressure to turn their luck around.”
With the standings reflecting early performances, MLB fans and analysts are eager to see whether the early successes of unblemished teams will sustain as the season progresses. Following the opening week’s developments, ESPN has released its first Power Rankings for the 2025 season:
