Dodgers’ Tanner Scott Struggles Early Despite Team’s Undefeated Start

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Dodgers remain undefeated this season, but relief pitcher Tanner Scott is struggling to meet expectations as he navigates early obstacles. In four appearances, the 32-year-old has allowed runs in three games while consistently recording lower fastball velocity.
Scott, who was touted as the top relief pitcher available in free agency, was expected to bolster an already strong Dodgers bullpen. However, his early performance has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike. On March 28, Scott blew a save opportunity against the Detroit Tigers, prompting manager Dave Roberts to address his performance.
“Tanner’s just working through some things. He’ll be fine,” Roberts said after the blowout game. “It’s not mechanical. I think there’s some pitch selection things. I think that he’s kind of trying to fill up the zone, which he always does. But he’s kind of building up his velocity and getting into the swing of things.”
Scott’s next outing came during the series opener against the Atlanta Braves, where he entered the game in the eighth inning with the Dodgers ahead, 6-0. He allowed a leadoff home run to Braves outfielder Michael Harris II, raising further questions about his performance after a stellar 2024 season, during which he didn’t surrender a home run to any left-handed batter.
Despite the challenges, Roberts offered reassurance regarding Scott’s physical condition. “I think there was a 95 (mph) in there tonight, and in Tokyo, he touched 97 (mph),” Roberts noted. “Typically, from what I’m gathering, the velocity picks up later. There’s obviously no concern.”
Scott was expected to be the Dodgers’ primary closer, with his sole save recorded during the Tokyo Series opening day. Addressing his recent performance, Scott stated, “Last year when we started the year, I don’t think I was throwing really hard…So just feeling things out, I guess, but I’m not worried about it.”
He emphasized that he is not dealing with any injuries, focusing instead on regaining his pitching rhythm as the season progresses. Despite his struggles, the Dodgers’ impressive start may alleviate some of the immediate pressures surrounding Scott as he seeks to return to form.
