However, Dominik capitalized, diving from the opposite corner with a frog splash and pinning Balor to claim the championship. This marks Mysterio’s first reign as Intercontinental Champion.

Before the match, Dominik’s father, Rey Mysterio, expressed the significance of the title during a red carpet interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard. “Oh my God! That title is very historic. Some of the biggest legends of this industry have held that title prior to holding on a world title,” Rey said. “As a father, that would give me the biggest sense of pride to be able to see him as IC Champion. You have no idea.”

This victory also ends Bron Breakker’s second stint as Intercontinental Champion, which lasted 181 days. Dominik Mysterio previously held the WWE Tag Team Championship and is a two-time NXT North American Champion.
