Dortmund’s Crisis Deepens After Disappointing Loss to Bochum

Bochum, Germany — Borussia Dortmund faced a significant setback in their Bundesliga campaign after a 2-0 derby defeat against VfL Bochum on February 15, 2025. The match left Dortmund, now at risk of missing out on international competition, reeling from their second consecutive league loss under new coach Niko Kovač.
Despite coming off a commanding 3-0 victory in the Champions League against Sporting Lisbon, Dortmund was unable to replicate that form in the domestic league. Bochum’s Georgios Masouras scored both goals for the home team, finding the net in the 33rd and 35th minutes. His first goal came following a strong setup by Philipp Hofmann, while the second capitalized on a critical defensive error by Dortmund’s Niklas Süle, who misdirected a back pass.
The loss in Signal Iduna Park marks a new low for Dortmund, who remain in 11th place, six points adrift of the European qualification spots. With only one victory in their last six league matches, the team has undeniably fallen into mediocrity, raising fears of a season without European football.
“We must be better in our basics,” said Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck after the match. “If we aren’t willing to fight for duels, we will be stuck in this position. It’s crucial we turn this around quickly.”
Dortmund’s struggles were compounded by a lack of offensive production. Despite attempts from players like Serhou Guirassy and Julian Brandt, Bochum goalkeeper Timo Horn kept the visitors at bay.
On the opposite end, Bochum celebrated a much-needed victory that temporarily lifted them off the bottom of the table, allowing them to gain renewed confidence in their fight against relegation. Coach Steffen Baumgart praised his team’s performance. “The players showed heart and determination today, and that’s what we need moving forward,” he said.
Despite having recent success against Bochum, Dortmund found themselves unable to respond effectively on this occasion. The mounting pressure now rests on Kovač to turn the situation around. “It doesn’t matter who the coach is; the team must take the initiative and improve,” Schlotterbeck stated. “If we continue at this pace, it could be a nightmare season for us.” The team will now have to regroup as they aim to escape their current spiral before it’s too late.
