Draft Predictions: Quarterbacks Shine Amid Uncertain Futures

BRISTOL, Conn. — As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, ESPN’s predictive analytics are shaping the expectations for top prospects, particularly quarterbacks like Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart. The draft kicks off Thursday at 8 p.m. on ESPN and ABC, drawing national attention ahead of the critical selections that will define the futures of many teams.
With emerging stars and a sizable pool of talent, teams have been crafting models to gauge where their top targets might land. ESPN’s Draft Day Predictor synthesizes expert mock drafts and historical trends, providing insights into player trajectories and team needs.
The model has identified Sanders as a probable first-round selection, currently projecting Miami as the most likely destination at No. 1 overall. With a 27% chance of being picked No. 9 by the New Orleans Saints, Sanders could find a newfound role following the team’s uncertain quarterback situation.
“We’ve seen how quickly a draft can shift based on team needs and opportunities,” said ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid. “For players like Sanders, these probabilities can change drastically in real-time, especially if teams look to trade into higher spots.”
Other quarterbacks, including Dart from Ole Miss, are in a precarious position as the draft approaches. Although he is viewed as a top-three quarterback, his odds to be selected in the first round are less certain, with potential landing spots fluctuating as teams weigh their options.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, picking at No. 21, face a dilemma regarding quarterback solutions, especially with only a 10% chance that anticipated top prospects will still be on the board. “Every team has to weigh their immediate needs against the depth of talent available,” Reid noted.
While other powerhouses like Alabama and Texas showcase running backs and wide receivers, ESPN anticipates positions like tackle are among the most critical, especially for teams like the New England Patriots, who saw significant blocking issues last season.
Boston-based football analyst Eric Wood explained the potential dynamics of New England’s approach: “With 80% odds that at least one high-caliber tackle remains if they trade down, it’s a calculated risk that could pay off given their previous performance.”
Additionally, prospects like Jeanty from Boise State, viewed as a leading running back, could be coveted by teams looking to enhance their ground game. He faces a narrow window, with a 91% chance of being chosen by the Chicago Bears if they move up from their current position.
“It’s a complex dance, and one wrong move can lead to significant setbacks,” Wood added, stressing how critical the decisions made in the coming days will be for franchises.
As the clock ticks down, teams continue to grapple with their strategy, weighing projections and potential trades. The anticipation builds as fans eagerly await their team’s picks, hoping for the right moves to bolster their future.
