Dragon Lee Retains WWE Speed Title, Faces Gable in High-Stakes Match
STAMFORD, Conn. — WWE Speed Champion Dragon Lee successfully defended his title against Chad Gable in a high-stakes match on February 1, 2025, retaining his championship with just over 35 seconds remaining on the clock. The victory came after Gable won the WWE Speed Championship Contender Tournament, earning the right to challenge Lee.
Lee, a member of the LWO faction, secured the win with his signature Operation Dragon finisher. The match, which aired exclusively on X, marked Lee’s return to in-ring action following a brief absence due to the birth of his daughter. Earlier in January, Lee had announced the birth on social media, sharing a photo of himself holding his newborn while still wearing his iconic lucha mask.
Gable, leader of the American Made faction, had previously congratulated Lee on the birth but made it clear he intended to take the Speed Title. In response, Lee challenged Gable to a match, writing on social media, “Time to come back! Congrats @WWEGable. I’ll see you next week.. Time to ‘Lucha Libre.’”
Following the match, WWE announced the brackets for the new WWE Speed Women’s Championship Contender Tournament. The tournament will kick off next Wednesday at 12/11c, with Kayden Carter facing Zoey Stark in the first round. The winner will advance to face either Alba Fyre or Shotzi, with the ultimate victor earning a shot at reigning WWE Speed Women’s Champion Candice LeRae.
WWE Speed, which returned to X with this special episode, continues to showcase high-paced, time-limited matches that keep fans on the edge of their seats. The show’s unique format, featuring matches with a strict time limit, has become a fan favorite since its inception.
Dragon Lee’s victory solidifies his position as one of WWE’s top stars, while Gable’s strong performance ensures he remains a contender in the Speed division. Fans can expect more high-octane action as the WWE Speed Women’s Championship Contender Tournament unfolds in the coming weeks.
