Drake Maye Excited to Work with New Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye expressed enthusiasm about working with newly hired head coach Mike Vrabel, calling the former Tennessee Titans coach “awesome” during his first public comments since the coaching change.
Maye, who spoke to reporters Friday night at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games, said Vrabel reached out to him shortly after being named head coach. “He’s been awesome,” Maye said. “Obviously, a guy who’s done it and played in the league and won a Super Bowl, you have a respect for what he’s done. I think the biggest thing is he’s been a head coach and knows what it’s like. So, I’m excited to get up to New England and get things going.”
The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye had an up-and-down rookie season, finishing with a 3-9 record as a starter. He threw for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while adding 421 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Despite his individual efforts, the Patriots struggled to a 4-13 record, leading to the dismissal of Jerod Mayo and the hiring of Vrabel.
Vrabel, who last coached the Titans in 2024, brings a proven track record to New England. During his six seasons in Tennessee, he compiled a 54-45 record, made three playoff appearances, and won the 2021 AP NFL Coach of the Year award. In his introductory press conference, Vrabel emphasized his commitment to developing Maye, calling him a “cornerstone” of the team’s future.
To help unlock Maye’s potential, the Patriots also brought back Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator. McDaniels, who previously held the role during two stints in New England, is best known for his work with legendary quarterback Tom Brady. Maye praised McDaniels’ experience, saying, “Coach McDaniels, obviously, what he’s done there and the success he’s had. It’s fortunate for me to go back and study all those years of film and get ready for this next season.”
With Vrabel and McDaniels at the helm, the Patriots aim to rebuild after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Maye, who completed 66.6% of his passes and averaged 6.7 yards per attempt as a rookie, is expected to take a significant step forward in his development. However, the team will need to address weaknesses on the offensive line and in the receiving corps to fully support their young quarterback.
“I think we have a great chance to turn things around,” Maye said. “We’ve got the right people in place, and I’m ready to put in the work.”
