Draper Faces Alcaraz in Australian Open Fourth Round After Grueling Matches
MELBOURNE, Australia — Jack Draper, the last remaining Briton in singles action at the Australian Open, has battled through three grueling five-set matches to reach the fourth round, setting up a showdown with world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. The match, scheduled for Sunday, will test Draper’s newfound stamina and endurance against Alcaraz’s relentless efficiency.
Draper, 22, has spent 12 hours and 34 minutes on court so far in Melbourne, showcasing the results of his off-season work on physical and mental resilience. “I’ve been trying to reverse what I do and breathe through my nose better,” Draper said, addressing past struggles with sinus issues that affected his breathing during matches. “When you are anxious or have long points, it’s not efficient to breathe through your mouth.”
Former British No. 1 Annabel Croft praised Draper’s composure, noting his “zen-like” calmness on court. “Lots of great champions like Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer have completely controlled their emotions on the court,” Croft told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It makes a massive difference in saving that energy.”
Alcaraz, meanwhile, has been dominant in Melbourne, dropping just one set and spending only six hours and 10 minutes on court. The 21-year-old Spaniard is bidding to complete the career Grand Slam, with the Australian Open being the only major title missing from his resume. BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller described Alcaraz’s form as “ominous,” adding, “He’s going to be incredibly difficult to beat.”
Draper’s physical trainer, Steve Kotze, and physio Will Herbert have played key roles in his improved endurance. Draper has also sought professional help to manage anxiety, which previously led to him being sick on court during last year’s US Open semi-final. “I feel like I can go for longer now,” Draper said, reflecting on his progress.
However, Draper’s chances against Alcaraz may hinge on his recovery after a late-night victory over Aleksandar Vukic. Draper emphasized the importance of rest and nutrition ahead of the match, saying, “I need to switch off from tennis and try to relax.”
The winner of Sunday’s clash will advance to the quarter-finals, with Draper aiming to reach the last eight in Melbourne for the first time and Alcaraz eyeing a step closer to completing his career Grand Slam.
